Is there a downside to having Cloudflare manage SSL security?
If Cloudflare is hacked, you will have problems, but so will Let’s Encrypt or any other service you trust. I wouldn’t worry about it.
The real problem is that Cloudflare does not protect the traffic between your servers and Cloudflare. In the free version, you only encrypt the traffic between Cloudflare and the people trying to visit your website:

What I have looked at to find the best free SSL certificate
I wanted to find free perpetual SSL certificates. Free tests are fine, but once you become dependent on their services, you have to pay, and sometimes quite expensively.
The options I have chosen will not increase your budget by a penny, ever.
So why pay for an SSL certificate?
The short answer is that only one type of SSL certificate is free and some businesses require other types. My guide to SSL Certificates describes the three types of certificates: domain validated (DV), organization validated (OV) and extension validated (EV).
If you need an OV or EV certificate, sorry, but there is no way to get one for free. Too much work related to the practical exam. In fact, if you see a free OV or EV, it’s definitely a scam you should avoid.
The good news is that a DV certificate will always protect your site and will prevent Google from indicating that your site is not secure.
When it comes to free permanent SSL certificates, you still have some good options. Every company works a little differently. Here are the basic criteria you should use to decide which option is best for your situation.
SSL certificate maximum price
How many free SSL certificates do you need?
If you need one or even more, you can’t go wrong with any of the options on this list. However, if you need a lot, the betting limits are important.

Let’s Encrypt issues both wildcard and SAN certificates. Buypass issues SSL certificates that can be used for multiple domains and subdomains, but not a true wildcard.
If you only have to worry about one site, it’s not so bad.
But people with a large number of sites and subdomains can use wildcard and SAN certificates to greatly reduce the number of SSL certificates they use. This greatly simplifies the management and updating of certificates.
With Cloudflare, you don’t have to worry about these differences once you’re set up.
Compatible hosting providers
Some hosting providers work with certificate authorities like Let’s Encrypt to make the process of installing an SSL certificate incredibly easy.
Bluehost does this, and activating an SSL certificate through them is a piece of cake. Once you have activated SSL with one click, the certificates themselves are installed and activated.
If you are thinking about Let’s Encrypt or Buypass, make sure the host supports ACME protocols. Otherwise, you can’t automate SSL certificate updates, which means you have to do everything manually.
